On May 5th a 3 1/2year old intact male blue tri Pitbull came to Northwood on emergency. He had been chasing a cat outside when he collapsed. The dog, named Diesel, had been diagnosed with heartworms the month before and was on the “slow kill” method of treatment. Medication was dispensed at this visit in hopes Diesel would improve. Diesel returned on June 7th. He was now quite ill. He was coughing heavily, lethargic, not eating and had another synocopal episode, all likely related to his untreated heartworms. The owner could not afford the recommended course of treatment and did not want him to suffer anymore since “slow kill” was not working for him. Diesel was relinquised to Northwood. Once stable (after another course of medications and exercise restriction), he was neutered. He was then given traditional heartworm treatment using the protocol recommended by the American Heartworm Society. Diesel is still on exercise restriction post treatment but is doing so much better. He is ready for a forever home.
