On March 24, 2021 a 1 ½ year old (DOB 12-19-19) 9lb Female Yorkshire Terrier mix was relinquished to Northwood Animal Hospital.  She had been diagnosed with megaesophagus the week before by another hospital in town.  The dog (we renamed Harley Quinn) was going to need long term management for her condition and her owners weren’t up for that.  With megaesophagus, food does not work it’s way down efficiently to the stomach due to weakened muscles of the esophagus.  The result is a dog that regurgitates food if feedings aren’t managed well.  Tests showed Harley Quinn’s megaesophagus to be due to a condition called Myasthenia Gravis.  This is an autoimmune condition where the immune system interferes with normal function of certain types of muscles, like the ones in the esophagus.  Some dogs only have the esophagus affected.  Other dogs seem to have weakness of limbs as well.  Harley Quinn’s symptoms only involve her esophagus.  She must be held upright for 10 minutes after every meal and is fed canned food which is easier to work down to the stomach.  Harley Quinn is up to date on her vaccines, has been spayed, had her rear dewclaws removed, microchipped and is heartworm negative. If you are willing to take on a cute little dog who will need to have her special feeding instructions followed for life, Harley Quinn may be the dog for you.
