On Nov. 23rd a very ill Walker hound puppy, female tri,was brought to Northwood by her owners. The puppy was severely emaciated. Honey was having serious issues with vomiting and diarrhea (parvo test neg). She had also gotten her left rear leg caught in a cage the day before and now could not use it. The left hock was swollen with draining wound found. X-rays showed no fracture but tapping the wound showed a bad abscess. The puppy was hospitalized for aggressive care. Honey seemed to respond well to treatment and was discharged Nov. 25th. Her owners returned with her that evening on emergency. Another abscess had developed, this one a large necrotic wound in her left inguinal region. The defect was large enough that surgery was indicated as it was very close to entering into the abdominal cavity. At that point the owners decided they could not manage further care of the puppy so they relinquished her to
Northwood. The puppy had emergency surgery that night to clean and close the wound. Bacterial culture was sent in to make sure she was not affected by a serious, zoonotic flesh eating bacteria. Culture came back just run of the mill bacteria. She responded well to surgery and aggressive antibiotic treatment. Her left hock is healing too. She is gaining weight. We renamed her Comet (her first adoption event was Delta Nu Zeta’s Reindeer run). Comet is now available for adoption.
