On Feb 17th a very ill Chih/Dachshund mix puppy was brought to Northwood on emergency. The owners had had him for 2 months. He was reported to be about 3 months old (DOB 9-12-19). Reportedly he was so messy (urinating and defecating) that he was being kept on the porch in a crate. He had soiled the crate so the owner hosed him and the crate off and left them out on the porch. Later that day the puppy was noted to be in obvious distress in the kennel, collapsed inside. On the way to the hospital, they noticed he was trembling. Rule outs for cause of his severe neurologic signs included distemper virus or other infection, parasitism, toxicity, profound hypothermia or trauma. The puppy presented laterally recumbant, nonresponsive, hypothermic (body temp too low to read), bradycardiac (slow heart beat) and hypoglycemic (blood sugar too low). He was close to death. The owners relinquished him to the hospital and emergency care was instituted. Remarkably, Marvin responded well to treatment. He is back to being a normal puppy now. He has been neutered and is completing his puppy vaccines series. Now he needs a new place to call home.
