On July 17th we got a video of a badly injured puppy from a veterinarian working at Perry Animal Hospital, asking if we could help the puppy out.  He had been found running at large by Taylor County Animal Control.  His right rear leg/paw was badly injured.  It appeared he had sustained severe strangulation injury to the right hock from something (string? wire?) being wrapped tight around the limb for long enough to cut off blood supply to the paw.  There was a clear line of demarcation with exposed tendons and muscles at about the middle of his tibia/fibular area (leg bones above hock).  The paw itself was swollen, discolored and cool to the touch.  The tissues of the leg below the strangulation were dying and necrotic.  The odor was terrible.  This puppy needed emergency surgery to amputate the leg, as the paw was beyond salvage.  Northwood Animal Hospital agreed to take on his case.

The puppy is a black and tan male Rottweiler mix, estimated date of birth is 12-17-23 we are guessing.  He weighed in at 34lbs.  We named him Spade.

He had surgery to amputate his right rear leg on July 19th. He was neutered and had a  microchip placed at the same time.

Spade adapted quite well to being a 3 legged dog, running around like he didn’t miss it even the day after surgery.

He was treated for hookworm and puppy vaccines were started for this “little” guy.  Spade has been friendly to every person he has met.  He has shown himself to be not good with cats though so he should not go to a home with cats.  He is ready for his forever home.
